Stem cell research

Stem cells have the unique ability to divide for indefinite periods in culture and have the capacity to differentiate into specialized cells. Hence, stem cell research can provide better understanding of cell fate determination, cell differentiation processes, and has the potential to provide treatments for a host of debilitating diseases.

Policy

Recognizing the complexity associated with research involving human pluripotent stem cells, CIHR:

• developed the Guidelines for Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Research, now integrated by the Panel on Research Ethics into the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans  (TCPS 2), Chapter 12, Section F, and
• created the Stem Cell Oversight Committee (SCOC)
