CIHR in European research programs

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research has a long-standing collaboration with the European Commission. To date, CIHR has participated in 60+ Joint Transnational Calls (JTCs) under Public-to-Public partnerships (P2Ps) and has funded 232 multinational projects. CIHR has invested over $66 million and leveraged over $244 million through these programs.

The Canadian dedicated funding has supported the involvement of Canadian researchers in multinational research consortia and  JTCs like the TRANSCAN-3, the Joint Program-Neurodegenerative Diseases (JPND), the Joint Programing Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR) or the European Join Program Rare Diseases and many other areas.

CIHR engages in European Framework Programmes (Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe) predominantly through P2Ps involving EU member states, other third and associated countries.

In November 2023, the Government of Canada closed substantive negotiations with the European Commission to join Horizon Europe as an associate country under Pillar 2. With the signature of the agreement in July 2024, Canadians can apply now as fully-fledged members of consortia. The Government of Canada established National Contact Points (NCP) to provide guidance, practical information and assistance for those interested in participating in Horizon Europe.

We encourage parties interested in JTCS to regularly look for news and funding opportunities on ResearchNet, Institutes webpages and other CIHR communication channels
